Why brain health matters

Our brains are one of the most powerful and important organs in our bodies, playing a central role in major functions, from memory, problem solving, coordination and balance to breathing, digestion, heart rate and blood pressure.
Healthy habits for your brain
- Challenge your mind. Keeping your brain active has short- and long-term benefits. Learn a new skill, take a class at your local library or try something artistic.
- Exercise. Regular movement increases blood flow to the brain and body, helping your brain in more ways than one.
- Be smoke-free. Smoking can decrease brain function; quitting can lower the risk toward that of people who never smoked.
- Manage diabetes and blood pressure. Control type 2 diabetes and blood pressure through physical activity, healthy eating and medication, work with your health care provider.
- Get good sleep. Quality sleep is important for brain health. Avoid screens before bed and aim for more than 7 hours a night.
- Eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight. Eating well can reduce the risk of cognitive decline and protect mental ability over time.
